Auto-saving is a separate feature of Versionary whose purpose is to save your work automatically. You set the intervals when Auto-saving takes place, based on time, keystrokes, mouse clicks, or any combination of those. When an Auto-save occurs, Versionary sends the application a save command, which forces the application to save the document you are working on to disk.
Auto-saving and versioning can work together to protect your work. You might think of versioning as protecting your back (past work), and Auto-saving as protecting your front (current work). But the two features work independently, and you can use one without the other.
Auto-saving generally occurs quite quickly, depending of course on the size of the document. There may be a small delay in the screen display of new input. Most people become accustomed to auto-saves and soon learn to work through them without the slightest pause.
Like versioning, Auto-saving works on a per application basis. In other words, you first select an application and then apply Auto-saving options to it.
To access Auto-saving, select an application from the Main Screen. Click on App Settings. When the App Settings dialog box appears, you will see the “Auto-saving” button near the bottom right. Click on it and the Auto-saving dialog box will be displayed, giving you three options concerning the types of intervals between Auto-saves. The options are to base the intervals on the number of
• minutes
• keystrokes
• mouse clicks
Selecting Your Option
After clicking on a checkbox to select a type of interval, type a number in the appropriate box to indicate the number of minutes, keystrokes, or mouse clicks between Auto-saves. You can select one, two, or all three types of intervals.
When more than one type of interval is checked, Versionary will auto-save as soon as any of the auto-save conditions is met. For instance, if you check the time and mouse clicks checkboxes, auto-saving will occur whenever the specified time has elapsed or the specified number of mouse clicks has occured.
If there is no X in a checkbox, Auto-saving will disregard the number in the text box that follows. Consequently, to turn Auto-saving off, you remove the X’s from all three checkboxes.
